Our Visit to Portchester Castle!

Our visit to Portchester Castle was an exciting day.  The children explored the castle, walked down the spiral steps and found out about living in a castle in medieval times.

Rhys and Rhianna being crowned King and Queen.  The rest of the class, who were servants, were not allowed too close to the King and Queen or behind them.

We heard about how a castle was defended with Trebuchet, moat and cross bows.

We found out all about the long bow and how difficult it was to use.

We learnt that bread was used as a plate and once the meat was eaten the  'plate' was then eaten - no washing up!  The servants weren't happy to find  out that they would normally eat bits of bread and onion whilst the King would enjoy feasts of deer and pigeon pie. The King was not happy though to be told the Church expected him to eat fish on one day a week.

We were able to look at and touch real artefacts.

It was a great day and a good start to our Castles and Knights topic.

Thank you to all the parent helpers.

  2. Sounds like you all had a great day. I may well try the bread for a plate idea at home, no washing up sounds good. Bens Mum

  4. What an interesting day you all had. Do you think the real Kings and Queens were kind or horrid to their subjects?
