Oh, they built the ship Titanic....

Mrs Watling has been working with Year 6 every Wednesday this half term. As part of our learning in music, she helped us to learn the song 'It Was Sad When the Great Ship Went Down'....

Oh, they built the ship Titanic
To sail the ocean blue,
And they thought they had a ship
That the water would never go through;
But the Lord's almighty hand,
Said that ship would never land.
It was sad when that great ship went down.

It was sad, It was sad,
It was sad when the great ship went down;
Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives,
It was sad when the great ship went down.

They were off for England
And not very far from shore,
When the rich refused
To associate with the poor;
So they sent them down below,
Where they'd be the first to go.
It was sad when that great ship went down.

It was sad, It was sad....
The boat was full of water
And the sides about to burst,
When the captain shouted,
"All women and children first!."
Oh, the captain tried to wire,
But the lines were all on fire.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

It was sad, It was sad....

Oh, they swung the lifeboats out
O'er the deep and ragin' sea,
When the band struck up with
"Nearer My God to Thee."
Little children wept and cried,
As the waves swept o'er the side.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

It was sad, It was sad....

We then invented our own lyrics to create new verses. It was very tricky as we had to ensure we maintained the rhyming patterns and rhythm structures! After a lot of careful thought, and our own 'Year 6's Got Talent' competition, we picked winning verses constructed by Sophia, Rosie, Ellora, Sophie, Dylan and Harvey....

Oh they sailed the ship Titanic, the sea was calm and blue.
There was ice on board the ship but no one ever knew.
The iceberg hit the ship while they were eating chips.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

When the ship began to sink, the kids began to cry,
Oh it looked so terrifying when the waves they rose so high
The captain filled the boats, but there were so many to float.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Carpathia tried to find them, the first time she was wrong.
Then Frankfurt and Olympic tried to come along.
But she didn't rescue much - mostly first class as such.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

We then performed our new verses together as a class. We even incorporated some fantastic musical accompaniments!
