Year 2 Seasonal Walk

Year 2 started Science week with a seasonal walk to Manor Farm Country Park.  
As we walked, we looked for the many different signs of Autumn.  The first thing we noticed was the wind - it was rather chilly! 

We found lots of signs of Autumn, including berries, seeds, leaves, sticks and fungus!

 

 

 We measured the water in the two streams that we saw.  There wasn't very much at the moment.  When we come again we will look to see how it changes.

We saw some trees that had been chopped down. We learnt how you can tell how old a tree is - by counting the rings.  It is amazing to think that the little trees we saw today will grow into a tree this big!

When we reached the field, we made trees using the sticks and leaves that we had collected so far.

 We looked at the view across the trees.  Not only were there beautiful colours to see but you couldn't see any buildings!

We came across a pond.  This pond was not your usual sort of pond though..... we could walk on it!  This pond has dried out, which is great for the amphibians that love to live there but not so good for any fish.  When we walk again, we will look at the pond and see if it changes during the seasons.

As we walked, we enjoyed making collections that we took back to school.  We then looked at them more closely.

Year 1 Football Fever

This week Year 1 braved the cooler weather and got warmed up by trying out some football skills. 

Our specialist PE coach will be teaching us this term, all the skills needed to play football. We started this week with dribbling.

The children began by keeping the ball close to them and under control whilst moving forward in a straight line. They then tried dribbling side to side between the cones.

Mr Rowland was very impressed with how hard the children worked and the level of their ball control.

Next we learnt a little bit about defenders and how it is their job to stop the ball getting passed them. Some children wore bibs and they became our defenders. They had to try and touch the ball with their foot as the dribblers came past them.

Year 1 definitely had football fever by the end as they didn't want the lesson to stop!

We are scientists

This term, Year Six are investigating the properties and changes of materials. On Wednesday, we were given a question:

How can we affect the rate at which a solute dissolves in a solvent to become a solution?

First, we had to find out what a solute, solvent and solution were.

Once we knew this, we could start to think about how we might investigate our question. We all took our investigations in different ways and asked different questions such as:

• How does the quantity of solute (e.g. water) affect the rate of dissolving?
• Does the order in which you mix the solute and solvent have an effect?
• What about the temperature of the solvent?
• Should we mix the solute and solvent or not?

We drew what we were doing using diagrams and then recorded what we observed.

We also observed what happened when different types of sugar were used. 











We learnt that sometimes mixed substances react to make a new substance. We also learnt that heating can sometimes cause materials to change permanently.

Year R Autumn fun.

Autumn fun

We have been having great fun in our Outdoor Classroom.

Last half term the leaves on the trees were green and the woods were fairly dry for us to play in.

We started looking at signs of Autumn and talked about Harvest time.

We explored what was inside pumpkins, with help we cut them up and scooped out the seeds using a variety of tools.

When we came back after half term we found the leaves had changed colour and fallen from the trees and the wooded area was not so dry.  We had great fun exploring the changes.

We had great fun rolling the pumpkins down the hill and chasing them.  We found the best way to make them roll quickly.

We will now keep watching to see what happens next.
