PE at Kings Copse

This term at Kings Copse we are getting ourselves active and outdoors
by learning the age old and very British sport of Cricket.
The children have been enjoying the outdoors and, as you can see, are
reaping the benefits of the outdoor sports areas that we have here.(and their favourite warm up exercise, "oh no's")

Already, after only two weeks, some potential superstars are emerging!
.

Watch this space for some extra cricketing genius over the following weeks
Oliver going for that elusive six.
As well as teaching specific ball and bat skills, we have found that cricket can also enhance our situational and spatial awareness skills too. From ducking and diving to adjusting fielding places depending on the batter coming in

James showing good form while waiting for the bowler.

Following on from cricket, we started to look at track events in athletics.  We started with some sprinting. To begin, we ran a short distance, timing ourselves.

After a small amount of coaching and practice concentrating on our running techniques, we had another go at timing ourselves.  Some of us were quite astonished just how much time we had shaved off of our original times.

We found that by leaning into the run and attacking it we could power off from the start line. We then noted that by trying to keep our bodies in alignment (hips, knees & ankles) and pump our arms like a trains pistons, we could increase the efficiency of the power our bodies provided and get quicker.

Mr Keenan was incredibly impressed by what he saw and even Mrs Gardner commented a couple of weeks later just how good some of thew childrens running techniques were!

  1. Well Done year 4,your PE looks like hard work! Expecially those " Oh no's!" It's really nice to see what you are all up to and that you are learning how to play all these different kinds of sports. :) Millie,s mum.

  2. Yes, it does seem like Mr Keenan is working you hard! My least favourite warm up exercise is the 'burpee'. I can only manage about 2 or 3 of these before collapsing in a heap. To do a burpee, you must:

    1. Squat with your hands on the ground,
    2. Kick your feet back,
    3. Kick your feet out to form a Y shape,
    4. Bring your feet back together,
    5. Down into a push-up,
    6. Up part of the push-up,
    7. Bring your feet back under you,
    8. Jump in the air.

    What's your least favourite exercise?

  3. It's good to see you, Year 4, still enjoying your PE lessons. The Ashes series is coming up this summer, I am sure some of you will be good enough to beat the Australians by then. Has anyone hit a 'Six' yet?

  4. The Ashes has been a Test cricket series played between England and Australia since 1882. In 1882, after a match at The Oval, Australia beat England on English ground for the first time. The press stated that English cricket had died. The stumps were cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media dubbed the next English tour to Australia (1882–83) as the quest to regain 'The Ashes'.

Hello Mrs Stanley, welcome to Year 4's blog.
