Hover balloon high jinx!

In Year 4 we have had lots of fun during Science Week.  We started the week by thinking about how hovercrafts reduce friction in order to glide over different surfaces.  We discussed how hovercrafts work by creating a cushion of pressurised air which reduces friction between the vehicle and the surface it is travelling on.  We decided to test whether a larger flow of air would always result in greater movement.  In order to test this we built hover balloons.  We used CDs, sports bottle tops, Blu Tack and balloons to create our vehicles.  They looked like this...

We tested our hover balloons on different surfaces, with different shaped balloons, with different lids and different amounts of Blu Tack to explore our question.  We made some really interesting findings which we would love to share with you on Friday.

As you can see, we had lots of fun, try making one of your own and see what you discover!

The children have loved all of the fun experiments they have tried out during Science Week and have particularly enjoyed the chance to work with different teachers and gain an insight into life further up the school.

We are all looking forward to welcoming you into Year 4 on Friday so we can share all of our exciting new learning with you!
