Murder Mystery in Year 5 and 6

A Murder Most Unladylike
Robin Stevens

Year 5 and 6 had a fantastic treat on Tuesday with a visit to see an author.  We were invited to Freegrounds Junior School to attend a book reading and signing by acclaimed author Robin Stevens.

Robin was born in California, but grew up in Oxford.  She studied crime fiction at University and has fulfilled her dream as a twelve year old to become a full-time writer in the style of Agatha Christie!  With enough twists and turns to captivate many young readers, the brilliantly feisty and funny schoolgirl detectives Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong solve a series of ‘Murder Most Unladylike’ mysteries.

It was great to hear about who inspired Robin as a child, especially when she started talking about the Famous Five and Enid Blyton as this has been a recent topic for us.  The talk included snippets from her previous books, tips and tricks for writing, a quiz to find out which of her detectives we are most like and a group writing session where we made up a story on the spot.

There are definitely some murder mystery writers amongst us and we have come back excited about our morning.

"It was a really exciting morning and it was really good because we got to hear a bit of the story"  - Phoebe Year 6
"I enjoyed every part of this morning because she explained everything really well especially how to be a detective." - Charley Year 6
"It was a fun morning trip because she gave us lots of detail about her books" - Ayla Year 5
"I enjoyed it lots because I got to get my book signed and talk to the author while she was signing it." - Louie Year 5

Thank you to the staff who made the trip possible and to Freegrounds Junior for being so welcoming.

  2. Thank you for letting me accompany Years 5 and 6 to Freegrounds this morning. It was really interesting to hear how Robin Stevens became an author, drawing on her own childhood experiences of boarding school and friendships to create her own detective stories. Well done to our children who represented the school well with good listening and participation.
