Can you split chromosomes?

Can you split chromosomes?

Year 5 have had great fun exploring
chromosomes this afternoon.

We are all different because of our DNA, which can be used by forensics to identify criminals.  Our topic is about Crime & Punishment so, as part of our science, we will be exploring how police use different strategies to catch criminals.

This week, we looked at our ink is made up from different colours.  Black is not just black!

We also looked at the definition of chromosome.  Did you know it originates from Greek?
Ask us all about it!

Today the firemen came to visit Year R

First we talked about fire safety in the home.  We talked about the importance of having a smoke alarm.  We need to check that it works regularly.

Then the firemen talked about how we need to crawl and stay low if there is lots of smoke as smoke rises.

We then talked about how we need to call 999 if we need to report a fire.

After that one of the fireman showed us how long it took to put on all his safety equipment.  We then tried it on ourselves.

We finished with going outside to look at a real fire engine.  We even had a go using the fireman's hose to pretend to put out a fire.

What a fabulous visit.

Thank you.

Killer Whale Update

Thank you to all those who came and
purchased cakes from Year 5.

Great news - we smashed our target of £146 by raising just over £170.

Keep checking back here for updates on the adoption progress!

Seacity visit

We had a brilliant day when we went to visit The Seacity Museum in Southampton.

The children have really enjoyed our topic about the Titanic and so were very excited about the trip.

We got to see what people would have been wearing, what they would have used and even investigated how The Titanic sank using an ice cube tray.

We also got to see lots of amazing things to show what life was like on The Titanic and learnt more about the crew on board. Our guide told us lots of interesting facts and stories about the sailing and the events that led up to it's sinking.

It was a great day and a big thank you to all our helpers on the day who made the trip possible.
