Sizzling Science in Year 4!

During our science lessons, Year 4 have been learning about solids, liquids and gases.  Today, we examined the effect of heat on solids.

We decided to investigate bread, chocolate, gummy sweets, pear, marmalade, butter, and the candle wax as an added bonus!  We also tested egg to see what would happen, and in the future we are interested to try a range of liquids.

First, we discussed the items and made predictions.  We had some particularly "heated" discussions over the egg.  Whilst some felt the egg would become more liquefied, others predicted that the egg would solidify.  It was decided that the ultimate test was for me to tip the metal container above my head.  Thankfully the egg had completely solidified!

The safety implications of our experiment were carefully considered.  We used sand trays, crucibles, candles and candle holders to melt our items on.  We understood the importance of staying at a safe distance and not touching the experiment.

After carefully observing each material, we recorded our findings using scientific diagrams and a short description.  We were very interested to find that our chocolate did not melt, instead it burned.  We discussed this and decided that we may have used too little chocolate or perhaps the temperature was too high.   We were fascinated by all of the items and conducted very effective observations.

We also discussed which of the materials would return to their original state.  Unfortunately, some of the items hadn't cooled enough to return to their solid state by home time so we will have another look tomorrow.

We had a fantastic lesson, full of curiosity and wonder.  The children all worked really hard and were terrific scientists!

Huge THANK YOU from all of us at Kings Copse for you support and generosity at our Coffee Morning on Friday 29th September! The morning was lovely, the cakes were fab and everyone had a lovely time.

Working together, we were able to raise a whopping £593.89 in total, including money from the hall, sales of cakes after school and a huge donation from one of our families from her work. This money has now been banked and we can be proud of helping to do our bit to help such a magnificent cause.

Year 1 trip to SEARCH museum

Year 1 had an amazing time learning about toys from the past during our visit to the SEARCH museum in Gosport.

First we spoke about how we know things are old and then ordered them on the time line. We used clues such as what they were made from and if they seemed similar or different to our own toys.

Then we then had a chance to take part in lots of hands on activities to explore toys and games from the past. We got to investigate how the toys were used, what they were made from and even made our own cup and ball game.

Dressing up from the past was very popular. We then had to find the toys we would have played with if we were a child in those times.

In the afternoon we went over to the Discovery Centre where we learnt about all the different types of books you can find in the library and we listened to a story. After a quick book hunt to check we knew our way around we then had the chance to enjoy some of the many books on offer.

Thank you to all the staff at SEARCH and the Discovery Centre for a fantastic launch into our topic on toys and a big thank you to all the parent helpers who were able to come and take part.

Year 2 Trip to SEARCH museum - Gosport

Year 2 had a wonderful day visiting the SEARCH museum in Gosport today. Our day was split into a number of engaging educational activities.

Children were able to explore a geology area of the museum and learn about dinosaur fossils. They were very excited to find a large woolly mammoth at the end of their tour.

Next, children visited a special 'May the toys be with you' area of the museum, where they found a large selection of toys that dated back to the 1970's from the original Star Wars movies.

After a visit to the library, where children learnt about how a library can be used, they were able to take out a book of their choice, which can be returned to ANY Hampshire library within the month.

Lastly, after a much needed lunch break, children were able to play with toys, old and new, in a number of engaging adult-led activities. Our afternoon ended by looking at toys from different eras - 1897, 1967 and 2017.
