Things are shaping up in a Year 6...

Over the last few weeks in Maths, we've been learning lots about 2D and 3D shapes. Can you distinguish between a quadrilateral and a polygon? How well do you know the terms parallel and perpendicular? Can you tell your vertex from your edge? And are you able to recognise a prism from a tetrahedron?

 

As you can tell, there's been a lot of complex terms to learn!

 

We played a game involving quadrilaterals. Without telling our partner, we had to describe a shape using its properties. Did it have acute angles? How about parallel sides? Was it a special type of quadrilateral?

 

We then applied our knowledge by solving problems. We picked different categories to label our table. We then had to design shapes that fit the criteria of each row and column. Harry, Thomas and Henry managed to complete their tables. Do their shapes fit both criteria? Can you spot any that they might need to edit? Click each one to see them bigger!

 

However, shapes aren't always 2D! They are 3D too! Using straws and modelling clay, we created our own 3D shapes and created property cards. Year 3 castle homework

 

The children in year 3 have been busy making super shields, amazing castles, brilliant descriptions and much more. Well done to the children who have put in lots of effort over the last few weeks.  Some of the work is pictured below and we will display some work in school.

 

Read for RNIB!

We've had a very busy day during our book day today! Whilst having lots of fun reading and taking part in different activities, we also learnt lots about how people with visual impairments read too.

To raise money for the RNIB, we all dressed up as our favourite book characters. Can you work out which characters we came as? Here are a few of our costumes!

 

Every class had a classic book to work with during the day. Year 6's text was George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. We used the book to create our own marvellous medicines!

 

Here's Cleo's medicine to cure  annoying sisters and make them turn nice!

 

 

We've also been learning a lot about the work of the RNIB in assembly because they came in to talk to us about how they help visually impaired people. Our guest even showed us some of the things that we take for granted but need adapted for VI people. For example, they supply children with felt tips that have different smells for each colour because their impairment might mean that they can't see the colour of the pen.

Mr Cownie also came in to talk to us about Braille and answer our questions about how it is used and how it works.

 

We took part in a sponsored read to raise lots of extra money for the RNIB too!

 

 

Miss Clarke-Lens came in to read a story to us. She picked one of her favourite books - Leon and the Place Between! Meanwhile, Mr Earle had the chance to read a story to children in Year 1!

Taking on board what we had learnt about visual impairment, we made our door into a huge cover for George's Marvellous Medicine. Look at the wacky ingredients that made it into our pan! Can you spot.... Perfume? Toothpaste? A battery? Shaving foam? A banana? To make our cover accessible to visually impaired pupils in our school, we ensured that our pictures were textured to stimulate the sense of touch in our VI pupils when they explored our book cover.
