For many parents a child starting school and handing them over to the care of another adult can be very hard. For some parents to 'lose' their child for a part of the day, especially if they have been at home with their child , can be quite lonely. So it stands to reason that most parents will ask their child at pick up time - 'What did you do today?'. They want to know what their child has been doing in school without them. Most young children will reply "nothing" or "played" and this has to be frustrating for a parent who really wants a blow by blow account of what has happened from when they left their child until they pick them up again.
So, We thought it would be helpful for parents to see all the skills the children have already learnt in the past two weeks. This is what your child has been doing in school, they have learned some if not all of the following:
To say goodbye to their parent/carer & trust they will come back at home time.
To register themselves in on the board and choose their lunch.
To wash their hands & get a their photo for self registering snack.
To choose one piece of fruit from the snack choice.
To open the milk bottles or pour a cup of water.
To wash out the milk bottle or cup and put it in the right bin.
To put the empty cup to dry after washing it.
To put the milk bottle in the white bin.
To wear an apron when playing at the water or painting.
To label their own art work.
To take turns using the sand timers.
To try & take off their own shoes & put on their welly boots & vice versa.
To try & take off their own jumpers & put them back on again.
To tidy up the classroom.
To find out what there is to play with in each area.
To be part of a group of up to 29.
To listen to a short story.
To speak in front of 29 children and lots of adults.
To begin to understand that when they need an adult they will have to wait.
To begin to understand that when they need an adult they will have to wait.
To stay and eat lunch in school.
To walk through an enticing classroom, full of toys & head out into the playground at lunch time.
To follow a group instruction - when the teacher says 'time to go to the carpet area - they know to all head off into the area together.
To do sally sitting without bouncing!
To wait for their name to be called before going out for the classroom at home time.
To play with sticks and know not to point them at eyes!

As you can see it's actually amazing what they have accomplished and I know there is more that could go on the list but it would take you all night to read them!!!!! maybe we should add some more each week?
Have you thought about different ways of talking to your children about what they have done with their day? Share something about what you have done with them.
We would love to know what gets your child talking about school, let us know.
This week a band of nurses have given us all a fit bill of health!!!!!!
There seems to have been a large interest in the bears that might be in the woods.
so watch this space for next weeks bear activities.
We try and have a 'family dinner' most nights and take it in turns to say one thing that has made us happy at school/work that day. Sometimes what is important in Izzys mind is something i'd never of thought to ask about. She has asked 'why do I have to go again, I've done that now?' I thought she'd be really tired starting school but has not gone to sleep until past 9:30 on a few nights this week! Has anyone else found that? Izzy (s) mu
