How tall is the rainforest?
We had great fun this week finding out about the layers in the rainforest. As a class, we recapped our knowledge of the four layers before heading out onto the field.
Mrs Warland set us the challenge of measuring out the different heights for each layer.
Forest Floor - 0m-5m
Understory - 5m - 25m
Canopy - 25m-45m
Emergents - 45m - 80m
We then had great fun working out how many children would fit in each layer by laying down on the floor in each section.
Forest Floor - 4 children
Understory - 14 children
Canopy - 14 children
Emergents - 24 children
As a group, we had to carefully decide which children were best to lay down in which order to fit the hole the best.
For our last challenge (and for fun!), Mrs Warland asked us to work out how many people it would take to fill the entire height if they were stood on top of one another. This meant we all had to lay down first (Mrs Warland and Mrs Glyn-Davis included) before taking it in turns to run from the bottom to the top in order to keep adding children on.
How many people do you think were required?
Looks great fun. I think it would take lots of people for the entire height!! Emily's mum
