Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, We're Going to the Moon!

Well the children have been playing in mission control today. The controllers have been wearing headsets and working on computers to ensure everything is ok with the mission. They have been launching rockets and flying in to space. Don't you love the space helmets? When children have landed on the moon they have had to work hard to collect samples and space rocks. Ask your child to tell you what they did on their adventures today!

 

 

SPY DAY

Spy Day (by Sophie and Harry)

Recently, Year 5 started a  mini topic on spies. To relate to this topic we held a spy day where all the children had to dress up like spies.




All day we did spy activities. First we filled in our own spy profiles. We had to make up fake identities and disguises. These are the results...

We made up fake missions and had to draw a story board to explain how we completed them. Some people had to destroy buildings or defeat enemies.









We also did physical training as part of becoming a spy. Everyone had a great day.

Banana Game

                                           

 

As part of our Fairtrade lessons we have been playing the banana game. To do this we were split into four groups. One group were called 'Fairtrade Farmers' and they had to cut out and colour the printed bananas neatly. Another group were called the 'Small farmers' and they had to cut out and colour in the bananas. Another group were just 'Normal Farmers' and they had to colour, draw and cut out the printed bananas. There was a group called the 'Fat Cats' and they only had to cut out the bananas because they were in charge of the farmers and the fields (land).

 

All the groups had a bonus,  but not all of them were good.  The 'Small Farmers' lost all of their crops in a hurricane and two of the farmers from the 'Normal Farmers' were ill and they had to sit out. On the bright side the 'Fairtrade Farmers' got an extra pound on every banana and the 'Fat Cats' got a bonus £20!

 

In the end, 'Fairtrade Farmer's got £38, the 'Fat Cats' got £58, the 'Small Farmers' got £8, the 'Normal Farmers' got £8 pounds.

 

All the year 5's liked the experience. It made us think about Fairtrade and why it is important.

Print Making



On the 11th June we spent the afternoon doing relief block printing.
Firstly, we were given a plain piece of paper to draw a simple design in pencil. Our drawings had to be connected to our project of the sea.
Next, we had to stick it to a thicker piece of card.
We then had to put glue on our pencil design and then we stuck string onto it, following our design.
This was to form our raised printing block.

We then took a piece of polystyrene tile and gently drew a similar design. We then went over it again and again untill it was deep enough but didn't create a hole. We had to be careful!
This was to form our indented printing block.

We then covered the blocks with paint using a roller. After that, we pressed them on a clean piece of paper to make a printed patten. There were starfish, shells and wave patterns.
It was very messy but great fun!!!!

Tips for talking

Here are a few of our top tips for talking that you could try when talking about things on the blog and having conversations with your child this week.

• Give your child plenty of time. It takes children longer to reply than adults. Try to give them 7 seconds!

• If a child says something inaccurately, acknowledge what they have said and repeat it back in the correct way.

• Build up a child's sentences by repeating what they say and adding words.

• Lots of questions can be daunting for some children. Try using more comments and less questions.

Keep up those conversations to boost your child's learning!

Dear Parents,
As you know we have been working hard this year to build better partnerships with you and younger siblings through work on our blog, by extending time to work alongside your children in class in the mornings and by introducing our songs and rhymes sessions. I am really proud of the work we have been doing and how well you are working with us to start conversations, sing rhymes and support your children's learning. I will be talking to some other teachers about what we have been doing next Wednesday. If you have any thoughts about the blog, songs and rhymes or the way children and parents come in to school together in the mornings please add them as comments below. To infinity and beyond

As you know our topic this term is pictures. However the children have become very interested in space. They are turning their role play corner into mission control and will be blasting off into space any day now. We are therefore building on this interest through images of space. At home you could look at some of the pictures on the NASA Gallery or there is a great video of images of the Earth, Sun and Moon on the BBC website. We hope these videos and images will spark off some conversations with your child. What do you think the image shows? What does it look like? Can you describe it? Vision Awareness Morning at Kings Copse Primary School

We had a brilliant morning yesterday in year one and year two! The children got the chance to take part in many different activities which helped them begin to understand and become more aware of different visual impairements that some people live with everyday.

The children had the opportunity to write their names and other messages in Braille.

They used the I-Pads to see what people with different visual impairements are able to see.

They had the chance to play different games using blindfolds.

The children used blindfolds and 'feely' bags to identify
objects without the use of their sight.

They looked carefully at their own eyes and drew pictures with labels
showing the main parts of the eye.

The children had the chance to be a sighted guide for
another child, helping them around the outside area.

Birdbox update

Well last weekend the number of chicks went down from 9 to 4 and then 3. We talked with the children about how this probably meant the other 6 chicks had died but some of them preferred to think they had flown away. Apparently the long cold wet winter has not provided great conditions for bird families this year and there has been a high mortality rate.

However our initial sadness has turned to happiness as the remaining three chicks seem to be thriving. They are growing fatter by the day. We think they look almost big enough to make it on their own so think they will fly away soon.
