Cooking with Fractions and Being the Teacher

Wednesday was another action packed day, helping us experience maths in different ways.

In the morning we were very lucky to have Mrs Andrews join us to help make some delicious biscuits.

Our maths focus was fractions and Mrs Andrews spoke to the children
about dividing the dough into quarters by halving and then halving again.

The children had to be careful to make sure that the
halves and quarters were equal.
Everyone then divided their quarter of the dough into quarters
so they could make 4 biscuits each.

Can you work out what fraction of the dough each biscuit was?

After break Year 3 got to be maths teachers! We visited Year 2 to share and teach some of the methods we have been using to add numbers on a number line. The children planned the activities, collected resources that be would helpful and thought about what vocabulary they would use. We also spoke about what we could do if someone was finding it tricky or if they were finding it really easy. The children had great suggestions for supporting and challenging their pupils!

Year 3 proved to be fantastic teachers and enjoyed explaining their methods to the other children.
Year 2 really impressed us with their listening skills and ability to work through each problem.

There were lots of positive comments from both classes and some children even wanted to stay in at lunch to finish marking their pupils work! There were some fantastic star comments and challenging next steps to help continue the learning.

After lunch we had a Mathletics competition!
The children challenged each other using the live section of the website and you could feel the excitement in the room!
Remember to log on at home to continue the challenges and at the same time improve your maths skills.

We finished the day by learning the numbers 1-10 and the days of the week in French using songs.

If you want to try them at home please use the link below.

A big thank you to Mrs Andrews and all the children in Year 2 for helping us have another fabulous mathematical day.

  1. Sounds fun. Is it a sixteenth? Looks like year 3 are great teachers and year 2 are great students.

  2. Thank you for letting me share your maths week. I really enjoyed cooking with you and was very impressed by your accurate and fair sharing of the dough through fractions. We were also able to use some 3-D shape vocabulary as well. I hope you all enjoyed eating the biscuits.
