At the start of the week, Kings Copse were set a challenge by Mr Earle; how many 1ps and 2ps would cover the two trees in the hall? Everyone then made an estimate to see how close we could get! Throughout maths week, everyone has been donating their coppers so that we could find out for certain.
First, we had some key questions to consider. How would we count the money?
Would we count it before or after?
What would we do if there wasn't enough? And finally, how would we separate the 1ps from the 2ps?

What would we do if there wasn't enough? And finally, how would we separate the 1ps from the 2ps?
We decided that we would sit in a circle and each go and get ten 1ps or 2ps at a time. This meant that we would be able to sort the money and count it at the same time!
We worked very hard to pile our pennies in a way which would make them easy to count!
By lunchtime, we had successfully sorted the money.
There were 3,225 1p coins and 1,636 2p coins.
The question remained - how many pennies would it take to cover the trees?
We then had to decide how we would put the money on the trees and count it at the same time.
We decided that one person would make a tally of the amount of stack of ten pennies we added to the trees. That way, we would be able to count the total easily.
Strangely enough, the 1p coins covered the green part of the tree exactly!
The 2p coins covered most of the green part but not totally!
We then had to decide how to cover the rest of the tree whilst counting how many there were. In the end, we covered the remaining part using the coins from the part we had already counted. By counting the coins left over, we could work out how many were on the tree in total.
We found that 4,202 1ps fit on the tree, whilst 2,952 2ps fit on the tree! Well done to the two Year Fives who had the closest estimates!
Can you work out how much money we raised in total?
That must of token forever! I really miss being in Kings Copse. I love looking at the blog to see what you get up to in year6.
