Philosophy

Philosophers in the making!

This year we are going to become philosophers.  This means asking some 'big questions' and discussing them to find an answer.

"The great thing about Philosophy is - THERE IS NO ANSWER!" - A year 4 pupil

This was a scary prospect at the beginning  of the lesson but it was great fun to hear the ideas of others.

This week we used a picture from our Literacy book and thought about the action that was being carried out - Beach Collecting.  Is it fair?
We began thinking about our own thoughts, views and opinions and discussed these with our peers.

before coming up with some deep, meaningful questions.  Mrs Warland started the discussion with questions like such as:

If everything was collected, would there be anything left?
Does collecting today mean taking from tomorrow?

This got us thinking and we began developing our own questions.

As a class we placed our questions on the floor and tried to connect some of the key ideas. This was then discussed further before we voted for our main question.

In small groups we discussed our initial thoughts before airing our views with the class - if we wanted to!

It was really interesting to consider both sides of an arguement and this lead to some exciting writing in Literacy about an environmental issue.

How would you respond to our question?
Is it necessary to collect things or should we just enjoy them where they are and take photos?

  1. I think that you should leave the beach how it is because if everyone took something there will be nothing left to look at!
