Henry Moore Sketching

We looked at some of the sketches by Henry Moore and how he used body shapes to portray people who were evacuated down the London Underground during the bombing raids. It would have probably been a pitch dark (due to the power failures), extremely cramped and very hot and humid. You could be down the shelter for a few minutes or many hours! Lots of people took things to entertain themselves... knitting, books, games, newspapers - anything to take their mind off the chaos happening above ground. Many needed to take a torch with them so they could read their book! Have a look at these Henry Moore sketches - what are the figures doing?

We used charcoal to attempt our own sketches of people down the shelters. Look at these fantastic sketches of Samantha (relaxing with a book) by Storm. She used accurate body proportions and has carefully added in extra details. If you look closely, you can see how she has carefully added a faint structure of circles and sausages to plan out her body shape before adding in the finer details.

    1. The bottom two pictures were drawn by children. I agree with you - I was really pleased with how carefully the children drew each other.

  2. The art work by Henry Moore is very moving, using charcoal really reflects the sombre mood during the raids. Storm's art work is also fantastic. Well done!
