Book week, day 4!
What an exciting few days year 3 have had already!
Mrs Phillips has been busy at home, making sure she's up to date with the events of the class story 'The Enchanted Wood', and what an exciting and gripping story it is!
Following on from yesterday's visit from the Storyteller, year 3 were challenged to become storytellers themselves!
Before they did this, they brainstormed what made the storyteller so good. They gave some fabulous suggestions, such as:
'He changed his voice for different characters'
'He used really good props'
'He moved his arms'
'He included other people'
'He didn't sit still'
'He made eye contact.
Mrs Phillips then showed the children how she would map out a section of our focus story with words and pictures to remind her of the key events in a chapter. She used this 'map' to become a storyteller herself and even let the children evaluate her- luckily the children were kind! They then gave her some suggestions for how she could improve her storytelling.
The next step was for the children to map out a section of the story they wanted to tell.
What happened next????? |
Once they had mapped out the events, the children were given some time to tell the story aloud without an audience. As they were doing so, they challenged themeselves to think about the storyteller from yesterday and try to make their storytelling as effective.
Using gestures |
Using actions |
Thinking about facial expressions |
Referring back to our story maps |
Was my voice oK? |
Does this gesture work? |
How could I improve? |
After break, some children were brave enough to tell their section of the story- we found some real storytelling talent!
What a performer! |
In the afternoon, we spent some time finishing yesterday's collages- they look fabulous!
What shall I use? |
Feeling proud |
The class are enjoying reading the Enchanted Wood so much that every opportunity possible has been spent listening to the story. Some worlds are good, some not so good- why not ask your child about 'Rocking Land'. We love the characters too, especially 'The Saucepan Man'
There are lots of other fun activities planned for tomorrow, including writing book reviews of the story and creating our very own lands that the children could visit at the top of the Faraway tree!
It looks like the children have really enjoyed book week and have been busy doing different activities. I know Taylor has been coming home very excited about the enchanted wood. She can't wait to hear more! When we came to parents evening it was lovely to see the year 3 door display.
