Book Week - Day One

Wow! What an exciting start to Book Week!

As the children came in this morning, they were surprised to discover that our door had been turned into a book cover! There was lots of talk (and questions) about some of the strange objects in the tree...

We then read Chapter One of 'The Enchanted Wood', which is our book for the week. The story begins when Joe, Beth and Frannie move to the countryside and find that they have an Enchanted Wood at the end of their garden. Using our own woods in the school grounds, we went to see if we could find clues about the rest of the story and the adventures the characters would go on. There were lots of suggestions about magic and who might live in the tree, as well as ideas about the children going on picnics and having adventures.

The saucepans, polar bear and cushions are still a bit of a mystery though!

Talking of picnics, we decided to put the eggs we collected last week to good use and make some cakes. If the weather stays dry tomorrow, we are hoping to go on own picnic and enjoy eating cakes in the wood just like Joe, Beth and Frannie.

We were also very lucky to have some story readers pop in. It was lovely to hear different people reading and introducing us to some new stories.

In the afternoon we had a chance to visit Hedge End Library. Many children already visit the library outside of school but they really enjoyed finding out a bit more about how it works and asking questions. One interesting fact we learnt is that they have over 40,000 books! Someone else asked if they have ever run out of books...luckily the answer was no (although the shelves do get a little bare over the summer!).

We have lots more fun activities for the rest of the week so check back each day to see what we have been doing.
